Language Therapy for Children with Autism:
Speech and Language therapy at STAR Center is provided in collaboration with other therapies to help the child maximize their potential. Speech & Language therapy supports expressive, receptive, play, and cognitive communication needs. Some of the tools used by speech language therapists at STAR Center include:
- Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS),
- Social scripting
- Activity schedules
- Social skills groups
- Cognitive skills development
- Social stories
- Video modeling
Augmentative and Assistive technology communication (AAC) Evaluation and Treatment:
Children who are not communicating verbally may benefit from an alternative mode of communication. Alternative communication systems can assist children with complex communication needs communicate their wants/needs and build their receptive and expressive skills. A successful alternative communication system can support a child’s ability to make friends, participate in group settings, and develop literacy skills. Some of the tools used by speech and language therapists at STAR Center include:
- Test of Aided Symbol Performance (TASP) evaluation
- Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS)
- Pixon Project Communication Program
- Use of various IPAD communication applications
- Simple voice output switches
- Coordination with professionals in circumstances when higher technological systems are appropriate
